Learning to Scuba Dive with CPA

Lectures for SAA Qualification Levels

Different levels of diving ability demand different levels of knowledge. The club gives all trainees the first 12 lectures -- covering Snorkel Diver and Elementary Diver -- as a minimum. The lectures average a little under an hour or so each. From then on, the diver is encouraged to do lectures at ever higher standards for higher qualifications. This is done at the diver's pace. The bullated items in the tables below are those things that all CPA trainees would normally do as standard.

Snorkel Diver

  • Introduction to SCUBA & basic equipment
  • Ears, sinuses and air-filled spaces
  • Respiration and circulation
  • Protective clothing
  • Accident avoidance and rescue
  • Basic first aid, artificial ventilation & CPR

Elementary Diver

  • Physics and the diver
  • Principles of SCUBA
  • Open water diving
  • Buoyancy jackets - ABLJ/Stab/wings...
  • Avoiding decompression illness
  • Personal diving computer

Club Diver

  • Diving air and deep diving
  • Diver rescue
  • SAA Bühlmann tables
  • Underwater navigation
  • Boat diving
  • Dive planning

Dive Leader

  • Decompression illness – condition & treatment
  • Burst lung – condition & treatment
  • Search diving
  • Advanced diving
  • Dive leadership
