News from Caversham Park Aquanauts (CPA) the friendliest scuba diving club in Reading.

CPA has it's own Power Boat Instructor!

CPA member Richard Butterworth has achieved his RYA Power-Boat Instructor qualification in November.

Richard, who is already a Yacht Master Instructor took the course primarily to assist members of CPA and the club in gaining more Power Boat licenses - and to make best use of the club ribs through instructing on regional courses.

The three day course trained Richard in the various techniques and teaching methods required to instruct the RYA Level 1 and 2 syllabus. This included planning and running a number of classroom and practical sessions under the supervision of a senior, experienced RYA Powerboat Trainer.

Anyone that has been out on a rib with Richard at the helm will know that he has excellent boat handling ability and a thorough practical knowledge of all things to do with boating.

CPA Boat Handling Courses

Thanks to Richards dedication, CPA are now able to offer Power Boat level 2 courses through Richard. Regarded by many as the ‘driving licence’ for powerboats, level 2 offers a thorough introduction to powerboat handling and the SAA basic boat handler certificate after cross-over.

Topics in the course include:

  • Launching and recovery
  • Confined space manoeuvring
  • Mooring
  • Man over board procedure
  • Anchoring
  • Towing
  • Engines
  • High speed handling
  • Collision regulations
  • Buoyage
  • Basic chartwork and navigation
  • Tides
  • Communication afloat
  • Emergency procedures

If you are keen to get your Power Boat level 2 so that you can drive CPA's ribs on diving trips please contact a member of the committee, or see Richard on a Tuesday evening at the pub.
